At the foot of the rising ground which forms the western wall of Kenya's magnificent Great Rift Valley lays the tranquil farming community of Njoro. There,a growing group of women gather natural colored brown fleece from the Kenana Farm. After washing the fleece is dyed with natural dyes grown on the farm and mothproofed with natural Pyrethrum flower. The fleece is carded by hand and spun by hand with spinning wheels fashioned from old bicycle wheels. Then the most precious animals available are loving knit by hand.
Starting with just a dozen women, the group now has over 200 knitters and 300 spinners. The women gather daily, fingers flying amidst a constant buzz of conversation. With your support there is now a health facility on the farm providing much needed medical counseling and exams in an area hard hit by AIDS.
A literacy program has been established offering different levels of reading lessons. Reports are that "Every lady learning to read has become a taller person, with pride!" As the readers came forth vision problems were identified and now those who were in need of eyeglasses are able to be fitted. Needless to say this is all due to the support of people like you!
