African Fabric Wax Batik #1080

$ 11.00

100% cotton. Preshrunk, colorfast.
Hand-stamped batik is a captivating process that transforms a plain piece of cloth into a work of art. The journey begins by meticulously applying melted wax onto the solid-colored base fabric using a carved stamp. This wax acts as a resist, shielding the areas it covers from the dye. After the initial stamping, the cloth is carefully submerged in a dye bath. Once dyed, the fabric is dried, and the wax is often removed, or a new layer of wax may be applied to create additional patterns and lock in the first color. This stamping and dyeing cycle may be repeated multiple times, allowing skilled artisans to build up a rich palette of many colors and intricate design motifs across the fabric's surface. Because the application of the wax, the dipping, and the reapplication are all executed by hand, no two pieces are exactly alike; consequently, each piece is a unique creation that carries the personal touch of the maker and the story of its meticulous production.
