Your Gateway to the World, Right on the Pacific
While our collection spans the vibrant markets of West Africa and the high plateaus of the Rift Valley, our home has been the rugged, mist-covered Mendocino Coast for over 25 years.
Ananse Village is more than just a gallery; it is a sensory destination. We invite you to step off Highway 1 and into a world of hand-carved textures, rhythmic patterns, and the scent of authentic Bolga baskets. Whether you are a longtime collector or a curious traveler exploring the beauty of Northern California, a visit to our Fort Bragg showroom offers a tactile experience you simply can’t find online.
While You’re in Fort Bragg...
We believe in the beauty of handmade things and the slow pace of the coast. To make the most of your trip, here are a few of our favorite local "textures":
-
Walk the Gardens: Just down the road, the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens offer incredible floral patterns and ocean views that rival any textile.
-
The Skunk Train: A Coastal Tradition
No trip to the Mendocino Coast is complete without a journey on the historic Skunk Train . Dating back to 1885, this vintage railroad winds through towering redwood groves, across deep-cut trestles, and through tunnels that have stood for over a century
The Skunk Train embodies the same commitment to preserving history and local heritage that defines our own collection. It’s an immersive, slow-travel experience that perfectly complements a morning spent exploring the artisanal treasures at our gallery.
For a truly unique way to see the redwood forest, book a seat on the Skunk Train Railbikes. Unlike the traditional train, these custom-built, electric-assisted railbikes allow you to travel along the tracks at your own pace. It is a quiet, intimate way to experience the forest canopy and local wildlife that you simply can't get from a motorized locomotive.
The Glass Beach Trail: Wander the coastal bluffs at Noyo Headlands Park for a dose of Northern California’s wild, natural architecture.
For the Craft & Textile Enthusiast
-
Pacific Textile Arts (Alger St): A true hidden treasure just minutes from our gallery. It’s a community-run space dedicated to the history and practice of weaving, spinning, and dyeing. Walking through their library and gallery feels like a natural extension of a visit to Ananse Village.
North Coast Artists Gallery: A cooperative local gallery showcasing our amazing local artists.Opening events on the first friday of each month when downtown becomes a busting scene.
For the Quiet Seekers
- Instead of the crowded main entrance to Glass Beach, park near the historic wooden train trestle. It’s a stunning piece of redwood architecture that leads you onto the Old Haul Road, a flat, paved path along the bluffs that is perfect for a peaceful walk away from the tourist centers.
-
Jug Handle State Natural Reserve: Located halfway between us and Mendocino, the "Ecological Staircase" trail takes you through three wave-cut terraces, ending in a pygmy forest where 100-year-old cypress trees are only waist-high due to the unique soil.
Local Flavors (The "Ananse" Coffee Break)
-
Headlands Coffeehouse: A local institution for over 30 years. It has that classic, unpretentious Fort Bragg vibe, often featuring live local music and walls covered in rotating local art. It’s a great place to sit with a book and a "Thanksgiving Coffee" (locally roasted right here in town).
-
Princess Seafood Market: For an authentic taste of the coast, head down into Noyo Harbor. This is a woman-owned-and-operated market where you can get fresh-off-the-boat crab and smoked fish to enjoy right on the docks while watching the seals play.
Where to Stay on the Coast
The Mendocino Coast offers a variety of ways to experience our rugged landscape, from historic estates to serene, nature-focused retreats. Here are a few places we recommend for a memorable stay:
-
For a Nature-Immersed Retreat: Mendocino Grove offers a sophisticated "glamping" experience that connects you directly with the forest and the coast, while Mendocino Cove provides a peaceful, scenic environment perfect for unwinding after a day of exploration.
-
For Historic Charm and Elegance: If you prefer the architecture of the past, the Weller House Inn and the Nicholson House are two of our local gems. Both offer a beautiful glimpse into the history of the region and provide a cozy, personalized stay within walking distance or a short drive from our gallery.
-
For a Rugged, Oceanfront Escape: For those seeking a truly unique, world-class experience, The Inn at Newport Ranch offers an unmatched perspective on the wild Mendocino coastline. It is a stunning example of how to live in harmony with the dramatic cliffs and ocean views that define our area.
