The journey of this patterned fabric begins with a solid-colored piece of cloth, which is then meticulously folded using specialized techniques. The integrity of these intricate folds is maintained by securing them through methods like clamping, careful stitching, or tight tying. These secured folds create a resist area where the cloth is protected from the dye, thereby preserving its original color. The fabric is then carefully hand-dipped into a dye bath to soak up the pigment. To introduce additional colors and layers of complexity, the cloth is often unfolded, retied, or refolded into a new configuration for another dyeing session. It is not uncommon for complex pieces to undergo as many as five separate trips to the dye bath before they are ultimately rinsed, dried, and smoothly ironed, revealing the final, intricate pattern.
